Foxy " Get Off Your Ahh and Dance"

Produced by Disco Music Icon Ray Martinez founder of Paris International Records and creator of the groups Amant and Passion, Foxy was formed in 1976 here in Miami. The group consisted of vocalist Ish Ledesma ,percussionist Richard “Richie” Puente ( son of Tito Puente), keyboardist Charlie Murciano, bass guitarist Arnold Paseiro and drummer Joe Galdo . Carl Driggs later joined on their second album as vocalist/percussion and shared songwriting credits.
Their big international hit of course was ” Get Off” but it was this track ” Get Off Your Ahh and Dance” that introduced alot of local club patrons to Foxy. The track was tailor made for Hustle Dancers , Ray Martinez’s signature sound is evident throughout the track complete with violins, flute and the tropical percussion that would cement Martinez’s image as the creator of ” Miami-Style Disco” Unfortunately this beautiful piece of music was obscured when several months later the better promoted T – Connection released a similar sounding ” Disco Magic” also on TK’s Dash Label. The track continues to this day to be one of the ground breaking records that defined the early disco Era.foxy2foxy coverRay Martinez

Land of 1000 Dances " El Watusi/La Bamba " 12 inch Version… Still a Classic

Since it’s release on Casablanca Records in 1983 Rags to Riches ” El Watusi/ La Bamba ” has been a standard must play in the progamming schedule of every veteran DJ here in the South Florida Area . Of course our large Hispanic population may play a major role in this decision by the jocks, but far from being another straight ahead Remake of ” La Bamba” like Antonia Rodriguez’s 1978 dancefloor hit, Rags to Riches ( 12′) builds it up with a long percussive intro ( 2:51) where a female voice ” narrates” her intentions to steal another girl’s boyfriend ( in Spanish) it is this intro that ” sold” the track to the DJs.The intro weaves seemlessly into ” La Bamba” is a classic style which originated in the Mexican state of Veracruz and combines Spanish, and African musical elements, yet the female voice on the track is speaking with a Carribean Latin Accent ( Dominican,Puerto Rican)aRod12 inch1000

The Chakachas " Jungle Fever" X-Rated Disco?

I got in trouble ,BIG trouble when my father walked in to a group of us huddled around my stereo listening to the 1972 song ” Jungle Fever” by the Belgian group ” The Chakachas” The lady in the song was yelling and screaming, and although we weren’t quite sure why, we felt very ” naughty”…. very naughty. Many Many years later listening to this track again I got a weird look from wife ” You’re a pig” I think she said. So then how did this song go on to be Certified Gold by the Recording Industry of America and ranked as the No. 51 song for 1972 reaching #8 on the US Charts..
Jungle Fever relies heavily on a rhythm guitar riff , a trombone , a flute and a series of pauses where a woman can be prominently heard moaning and breathing heavily later joined by a man. It is a minimalist track yet the listener ( at least men) is hooked immediately and continues to listen despite it’s repetitive nature, curious to see ” what happens next” Call it an ” Adult Film on Vinyl” The original 45 RPM single was only 2:32 seconds ( later extended) , yet it feels longer ( no pun intended).Chaka

The Chakachas were a Belgian based group of Latin studio musicians, founded in 1958 by percussionist Gaston Bogaert. Although it did receive airplay it’s source of popularity came straight from the nightclubs at the time where the track was a must play. The 1997 film “Boogie Nights” revived it and featured it as background in one of it’s scenes. You can find this 45 RPM in most every collection from veteran DJs of the 70s. It was remade in 1982 by Kinkina on Profile Records Remixed by Phil Harding and produced by Paul Oakenfeld .It’s worth another listen.remake

Disco Movie Marathon

Put on your Polyester Pajamas and settle in for a Disco Movie Marathon, although it may not be as long as you would imagine. There were alot of movies made during the Disco Era ( and slightly after),many of them wanted to make you believe they were about Disco , but how many true Disco movies were there? We know Saturday Night Fever of course ,but as far as true Disco films are concerned , those that portray the music and the lifestyle on the screen, there are just a few.saturdaynightfever
Thank God It’s Friday is a 1978 film produced by Motown Productions and Casablanca Filmworks for Columbia Pictures (whose torch-holding mascot, in a specially produced logo, dances to disco music before the opening credits). The film features a young Jeff Golblum and Donna Summer acting ( struggling artist trying to make it big) The film featured tracks by Casablanca heavy hitters such as Love and Kisses, DC LaRue, Santa Esmeralda ,Patti Brooks, Cameo others such as Diana Ross,Giorgio Moroder and of course Donna herself which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and also made it to #3 on the US singles chart. The movie although weak in depicting the Disco experience was more accurate musically than Sat.Night Fever.thank_god_its_friday
Roller Boogie 1979 starred the Exorcist’s Linda Blair in a film that concentrated on the ” Roller Disco” side of the genre with mostly original songs composed specifically for the film with the exception of Eart Wind and Fire’s ” Boogie Wonderland” So cheesy, it’s fun.rollerboogie
Can’t Stop The Music was terrible but we didn’t care because we were meeting one of the most popular groups of the era ,The Village People. The movie was a semi auto-biography on the formation of the Village People. When the movie was released in June of 1980 ,Disco the genre was already experiencing a negative backlash. Personally the title track was the only Disco worthy song on the soundtrack.cantstopmusic
Many other films attempted to Cash in on the Disco image ,mostly unsuccessfully. Xanadu was one such film. The film was originally conceived as a roller disco picture, but in my opinion didn’t have Disco bone in it. Electric Light Orchestra provided the bulk of it’s soundtrack. 220px-Xanadufilm
Staying Alive was the sequel to Saturday Night Fever. The title comes from the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive,” that was featured in the original. The film centers around Tony trying to become a Broadway Dancer. 0% Disco ,but we do get to see his famous “white suit” once again.Stayingalive
In 1998 Miramax Film released a film that would recreate the excitement of Disco and nightclubs in the 70s. ” 54″ revolved around a young man and his quest to get into the famed nightclub eventually getting sucked in to it’s corruption. The film featured one of my favorite ” Remakes” originally done by Gordon Lightfoot and then by Viola Wills ” If You Could Read My Mind” by Stars on 54 featuring Ultra Nate, Amber and Jocelyn Enriquez. It is this track and this moment in the film that gave me ” Disco Goosebumps”
Car Wash the album was a huge hit, producing 3 Top Ten singles, “Car Wash”, “I Wanna Get Next to You”, and “I’m Going Down”. The title track was also a number one single on the Billboard pop charts. One of the most identifiable tracks of the era, but Disco Movie it wasn’t.

Flashdance 1983 not considered a Disco movie in my opinion ,but it did introduce ” Breakdancing” into the mainstream. The #1 ” Flasdance…What a feeling” composed by Disco producer Giorgio Moroder was the film’s only connection to the genre.

The rest of these films are honorable mention and basically just used Disco as a marketing ploy.disco-summerLast DaysGodfatherFunkytown

December 14, 1977 Saturday Night Fever ( The Movie) Released

Although it only represented a ” localized” Disco experience, specifically that of Italian Americans living in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. The film helped propel Disco into the mainstream. Although the music and dancing were secondary in the telling of the story of Tony Manero ,the visuals defined the period and was the mold for new ” Disco Converts” Polyester shirts, Blow Dried hair, gold chains, elevator shoes and other details that would become standard disco style. “Would you just watch the hair? I work a long time on my hair, and you hit it!” was one of my favorite quotes from the movie. The songs used in the film were not really representative of the style of music heard in the nightclubs at the time , but that didn’t keep an 18 year old DJ from seeing it countless of times. In the end Saturday Night Fever would represent ” Disco” and would be the future source of ridicule to generations of people who never really got to know the true essence of the music and the scene.

Disco: Yes Or No? ELO " Shine a Little Love "

This is one Happy song released in 1979 by Electric Light Orchestra . It wants to be Disco , but it sits on the fence alternating between Disco and their signature ” Beatles” influenced elements. Founded in the early 60s the concept was to create a new sound using violins, cellos, string basses, horns and woodwinds to give the tracks a classical sound. ” Shine a Little Love” from the album ” Discovery” reached #1 in Canada but only charted #8 ( still not bad) in the United States.ELO collected 19 CRIA, 21 RIAA and 38 BPI awards, and sold over 50 million records worldwide But is it Disco? Did it play at the clubs? elo

Disco Undercover

So Disco became a “bad word’ Radio stations  went back to playing Top 40 and Rock and before you knew it Hip Hop took over. But did it go ” Undercover” ? Did artists influenced by this music continue to produce ” Disco infused” tracks? Do contemporary artists such as Daft Punk, Bruno Marrs,Justin Timberlake, DJ Cassidy, Pharrel and others continue to produce this music and covertly serve it up as contemporary pop? Can there be Disco music without Disco” The  Culture” ?  Was the music connected to an experience , a musical style that can no longer be labeled  Disco” without all of it’s peripheral accessories ? We are a global community of fans ,sharing memories via You tube links .Are we buying the music from the artists that pay homage to this style by incorporating it into their music,. somehow sending them a message that we appreciate their efforts? We should. Below are a just few of the artists that over the recent  years have carried the torch for the music that started the party.
Jamiroquai is   a British funk and acid jazz band formed in 1992. Fronted by lead singer Jay Kay . The groups abilty to fuse Disco and contemporary styles is unmatched.

David Russell Lee Dave combined his Love  for disco music into house music as both a producer and remixer, Making him one of the pioneers of  “Disco-House ”

Justin Timberlake ( Justin Randall Timberlake ) Not only was he Britney Spear’s boyfriend, but this former N-Sync member can crank out some funky and downright Disco sounding tracks.

Afro Medusa – Pasilda is a British dance music trio, of members Isabel Fructuoso, Nick Bennett and Patrick Cole. They had two songs on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, beginning with “Pasilda”, which hit #1 in 2000. Classified under ” Latin House: there are definately some Disco influences running through the track.
;
DJ Cassidy – Calling all Hearts  (Cassidy Podell ) is a DJ from New York associated with some very high profile people like President Obama, Beyonce. His first album, Paradise Royale, is scheduled for release by Columbia Records in 2014. The aim of the album is to “bring back the greatest and most universal dance music of all time,” with new material that captures the essence of 1978–1982 dance music. With this album hehas brought together a 14-piece string section and 22 of the world’s most notable musicians from that period, including Nile Rodgers of Chic; Ray Parker Jr., who worked with Stevie Wonder and Barry White; Jerry Hey, who arranged Michael Jackson‘s horns and string sections; and Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Larry Dunn of Earth, Wind and Fire.

Daft Punk – Get Lucky The French duo gave it to us good in 2013 proving to the world that Disco was very much alive. Released on their ” Random Access” album. The song broke records with the highest number of plays of any song in a single day on music streaming application Spotify. They won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year 2014

Disco: Yes or No? Paul McCartney & Wings " Goodnight Tonight"

Even one of the Beatles had to give it a try. Paul McCartney’s attempt at this genre wasn’t half bad. ” Goodnight Tonight” released in 1979 is a catchy track driven by it’s bass line that balances very well between the dance world and pop radio. Flamenco Guitar intro lets us know that this is not your usual McCartney track. I do remember this track playing at peak times during the course of a regular club night. As usual the hard core McCartney fans were not too happy about Paul’s dalliance into this forbidden territory , but it worked out for everyone involved. Disco….maybe 50/50 …smart guy. ( by the way that’s his wife at the beginning of the video)

DISCO: YES or NO? Rolling Stones " Miss You"

The Wikipedia entry for the Track” Miss You” by The Rolling Stones ( 1978) lists it’s genre as ” Disco” . Yet other than it’s 4 on the floor beat I must be missing something. An 8:36 version, called the “Special Disco Version”, was released as the Stone’s first 12-inch single ( In Pink Vinyl). According to Drummer Charlie Watts the track was heavily influenced by going to the Nightclubs of the period. Mick Jagger and Billy Preston came up with the idea while touring Europe in 1976.The track went to #1 on US Billboard Hot 100 and has been featured in programs such as Miami Vice. I do know a few Disco DJs of the period who would incorporate this track into their sets due to it’s prominent bassline.
