Disco Movie Marathon

Put on your Polyester Pajamas and settle in for a Disco Movie Marathon, although it may not be as long as you would imagine. There were alot of movies made during the Disco Era ( and slightly after),many of them wanted to make you believe they were about Disco , but how many true Disco movies were there? We know Saturday Night Fever of course ,but as far as true Disco films are concerned , those that portray the music and the lifestyle on the screen, there are just a few.saturdaynightfever
Thank God It’s Friday is a 1978 film produced by Motown Productions and Casablanca Filmworks for Columbia Pictures (whose torch-holding mascot, in a specially produced logo, dances to disco music before the opening credits). The film features a young Jeff Golblum and Donna Summer acting ( struggling artist trying to make it big) The film featured tracks by Casablanca heavy hitters such as Love and Kisses, DC LaRue, Santa Esmeralda ,Patti Brooks, Cameo others such as Diana Ross,Giorgio Moroder and of course Donna herself which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and also made it to #3 on the US singles chart. The movie although weak in depicting the Disco experience was more accurate musically than Sat.Night Fever.thank_god_its_friday
Roller Boogie 1979 starred the Exorcist’s Linda Blair in a film that concentrated on the ” Roller Disco” side of the genre with mostly original songs composed specifically for the film with the exception of Eart Wind and Fire’s ” Boogie Wonderland” So cheesy, it’s fun.rollerboogie
Can’t Stop The Music was terrible but we didn’t care because we were meeting one of the most popular groups of the era ,The Village People. The movie was a semi auto-biography on the formation of the Village People. When the movie was released in June of 1980 ,Disco the genre was already experiencing a negative backlash. Personally the title track was the only Disco worthy song on the soundtrack.cantstopmusic
Many other films attempted to Cash in on the Disco image ,mostly unsuccessfully. Xanadu was one such film. The film was originally conceived as a roller disco picture, but in my opinion didn’t have Disco bone in it. Electric Light Orchestra provided the bulk of it’s soundtrack. 220px-Xanadufilm
Staying Alive was the sequel to Saturday Night Fever. The title comes from the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive,” that was featured in the original. The film centers around Tony trying to become a Broadway Dancer. 0% Disco ,but we do get to see his famous “white suit” once again.Stayingalive
In 1998 Miramax Film released a film that would recreate the excitement of Disco and nightclubs in the 70s. ” 54″ revolved around a young man and his quest to get into the famed nightclub eventually getting sucked in to it’s corruption. The film featured one of my favorite ” Remakes” originally done by Gordon Lightfoot and then by Viola Wills ” If You Could Read My Mind” by Stars on 54 featuring Ultra Nate, Amber and Jocelyn Enriquez. It is this track and this moment in the film that gave me ” Disco Goosebumps”
Car Wash the album was a huge hit, producing 3 Top Ten singles, “Car Wash”, “I Wanna Get Next to You”, and “I’m Going Down”. The title track was also a number one single on the Billboard pop charts. One of the most identifiable tracks of the era, but Disco Movie it wasn’t.

Flashdance 1983 not considered a Disco movie in my opinion ,but it did introduce ” Breakdancing” into the mainstream. The #1 ” Flasdance…What a feeling” composed by Disco producer Giorgio Moroder was the film’s only connection to the genre.

The rest of these films are honorable mention and basically just used Disco as a marketing ploy.disco-summerLast DaysGodfatherFunkytown

December 14, 1977 Saturday Night Fever ( The Movie) Released

Although it only represented a ” localized” Disco experience, specifically that of Italian Americans living in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. The film helped propel Disco into the mainstream. Although the music and dancing were secondary in the telling of the story of Tony Manero ,the visuals defined the period and was the mold for new ” Disco Converts” Polyester shirts, Blow Dried hair, gold chains, elevator shoes and other details that would become standard disco style. “Would you just watch the hair? I work a long time on my hair, and you hit it!” was one of my favorite quotes from the movie. The songs used in the film were not really representative of the style of music heard in the nightclubs at the time , but that didn’t keep an 18 year old DJ from seeing it countless of times. In the end Saturday Night Fever would represent ” Disco” and would be the future source of ridicule to generations of people who never really got to know the true essence of the music and the scene.

Disco: Yes Or No? ELO " Shine a Little Love "

This is one Happy song released in 1979 by Electric Light Orchestra . It wants to be Disco , but it sits on the fence alternating between Disco and their signature ” Beatles” influenced elements. Founded in the early 60s the concept was to create a new sound using violins, cellos, string basses, horns and woodwinds to give the tracks a classical sound. ” Shine a Little Love” from the album ” Discovery” reached #1 in Canada but only charted #8 ( still not bad) in the United States.ELO collected 19 CRIA, 21 RIAA and 38 BPI awards, and sold over 50 million records worldwide But is it Disco? Did it play at the clubs? elo

Disco Undercover

So Disco became a “bad word’ Radio stations  went back to playing Top 40 and Rock and before you knew it Hip Hop took over. But did it go ” Undercover” ? Did artists influenced by this music continue to produce ” Disco infused” tracks? Do contemporary artists such as Daft Punk, Bruno Marrs,Justin Timberlake, DJ Cassidy, Pharrel and others continue to produce this music and covertly serve it up as contemporary pop? Can there be Disco music without Disco” The  Culture” ?  Was the music connected to an experience , a musical style that can no longer be labeled  Disco” without all of it’s peripheral accessories ? We are a global community of fans ,sharing memories via You tube links .Are we buying the music from the artists that pay homage to this style by incorporating it into their music,. somehow sending them a message that we appreciate their efforts? We should. Below are a just few of the artists that over the recent  years have carried the torch for the music that started the party.
Jamiroquai is   a British funk and acid jazz band formed in 1992. Fronted by lead singer Jay Kay . The groups abilty to fuse Disco and contemporary styles is unmatched.

David Russell Lee Dave combined his Love  for disco music into house music as both a producer and remixer, Making him one of the pioneers of  “Disco-House ”

Justin Timberlake ( Justin Randall Timberlake ) Not only was he Britney Spear’s boyfriend, but this former N-Sync member can crank out some funky and downright Disco sounding tracks.

Afro Medusa – Pasilda is a British dance music trio, of members Isabel Fructuoso, Nick Bennett and Patrick Cole. They had two songs on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, beginning with “Pasilda”, which hit #1 in 2000. Classified under ” Latin House: there are definately some Disco influences running through the track.
;
DJ Cassidy – Calling all Hearts  (Cassidy Podell ) is a DJ from New York associated with some very high profile people like President Obama, Beyonce. His first album, Paradise Royale, is scheduled for release by Columbia Records in 2014. The aim of the album is to “bring back the greatest and most universal dance music of all time,” with new material that captures the essence of 1978–1982 dance music. With this album hehas brought together a 14-piece string section and 22 of the world’s most notable musicians from that period, including Nile Rodgers of Chic; Ray Parker Jr., who worked with Stevie Wonder and Barry White; Jerry Hey, who arranged Michael Jackson‘s horns and string sections; and Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Larry Dunn of Earth, Wind and Fire.

Daft Punk – Get Lucky The French duo gave it to us good in 2013 proving to the world that Disco was very much alive. Released on their ” Random Access” album. The song broke records with the highest number of plays of any song in a single day on music streaming application Spotify. They won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year 2014

Disco: Yes or No? Paul McCartney & Wings " Goodnight Tonight"

Even one of the Beatles had to give it a try. Paul McCartney’s attempt at this genre wasn’t half bad. ” Goodnight Tonight” released in 1979 is a catchy track driven by it’s bass line that balances very well between the dance world and pop radio. Flamenco Guitar intro lets us know that this is not your usual McCartney track. I do remember this track playing at peak times during the course of a regular club night. As usual the hard core McCartney fans were not too happy about Paul’s dalliance into this forbidden territory , but it worked out for everyone involved. Disco….maybe 50/50 …smart guy. ( by the way that’s his wife at the beginning of the video)

DISCO: YES or NO? Rolling Stones " Miss You"

The Wikipedia entry for the Track” Miss You” by The Rolling Stones ( 1978) lists it’s genre as ” Disco” . Yet other than it’s 4 on the floor beat I must be missing something. An 8:36 version, called the “Special Disco Version”, was released as the Stone’s first 12-inch single ( In Pink Vinyl). According to Drummer Charlie Watts the track was heavily influenced by going to the Nightclubs of the period. Mick Jagger and Billy Preston came up with the idea while touring Europe in 1976.The track went to #1 on US Billboard Hot 100 and has been featured in programs such as Miami Vice. I do know a few Disco DJs of the period who would incorporate this track into their sets due to it’s prominent bassline.

Top 40 Disco Tracks

Top 40 Lists of Disco music are so very different in every city where they are compiled. Miami is unique because we embraced alot of the more energetic tracks like my #1 Romeo and Juliette which to my surprise doesn’t even scratch the Top 10 of other lists I’ve seen. I have seen some lists with Cheryl Lynn’s ” Got to be Real” as their #1 , great song but really wasn’t a nightclub favorite down here ( assuming you are located above me ) Miami was a city whose Disco music was not defined by radio hits . We created our own hits. Each club had that particular track that could not be heard in any other nightclub. The DJ prided himself in being unique. 9 times out of 10 when the song hit the radio the track would immediately be removed from the club playlist. The ” cool” factor was gone. The song would belong to the fickle masses who would consume it, burn it out and move on the next song FM radio would feed them. Djs protected their music. Cultivated an artist. Grace Jones was an excellent example of an artist that DJ’s slowly eased into the dancefloor. Her music was appreciated by the jocks, but the crowds had to be trained to accept her arrangements and unique abrasive vocal style. Djs would champion artists and groups and slowly train their audiences into accepting new sounds. Today’s DJs follow radio’s cookie cutter patterns and it is not unusual to hear the same artist or song for that matter 2 and 3 times per night .Blasphemy in the 70s and early 80s. It is difficult to compile such a list, without discussion. I have spoken to a variety of local jocks of the era asked them to give me their opinion based on audience reaction and not so much personal tastes. We would have had alot of obscure tracks in the list .In many cases my number 10 was their number 12 and so on but overall the unanimous #1 was in fact Alec R. Costandino’s ” Romeo and Juliette” considered by all of us a ” Disco Masterpiece” Comment below with your thoughts.

Put a Little Disco in your Holidays

It’s the holidays, everyone’s over the house when suddenly somebody yells ” Put on some Christmas music !!” Instead of the usual Elvis ” Blue Christmas ” or the Bing Crosby standards we usually hear around this time why don’t you take them back ,way back to the 70s ,when even Christmas wasn’t immune to the Disco fever !! ( after all you are wearing a polyester sweater) So here are some of your choices when you want to put a little Disco in your Holidays !!salsoul-orchestra-the-LP51bcMrAyF9L._SY355_
Probably THE most popular choice to ” Discofy” any party is ” Salsoul’s Christmas Jollies” released in 1976 Produced by Vince Montana Jr and even includes vocals by Denise Montana who sang ” You’re My Number 1 DJ” on Goody Goody’s LP. If you are lucky to find the vinyl version snatch it up as the CD Re-Issue appears to be Edited and even includes “remixes” of certain tracks. “Some of the arrangements on the tracks were also changed, and not for the better. In fact, some of them sound pretty bad. The new Silent Night is just one example–with that awful acoustic piano drowning out everything else. That piano piece is an overdub. It was not in the original recording. Overall, the timbral quality of the sound on this CD is ‘tinny’, as though they had held up a transistor radio to a tape recorder to re-record the music. Somebody attempted to re-engineer the original and messed up the sound quality pretty badly. This CD lacks the heavy, throbbing rhythm and bass that the vinyl LP had. Yet another example of a classic ruined by some fool’s attempt to modernize it.” JohnFTL
Overall though both volumes provide the most ” Disco Christmas ” Bang for the buck. The Rest are pretty standard Christmas fare with a disco beat backing up the tracks. Nice background music for the beginning of a holiday party but that’s it! Not rockin’ disco like I thought it should be.

Of course Wham’s Last Christmas released on Epic Records in 1984,is a modern day Christmas Classic worthy of a mention ( although not Disco) but my favorite in capturing the mood and on the laid back side as opposed to the more energetic ” Christmas Jollies’ Is the Whisper’s Christmas Album . All the standard Holiday hits but with that soulful feel that only The Whispers could have delivered. I personally, strongly recommend this one in addition to the Salsoul one, those two should give you that old school holiday feel you desire. Happy Holidays !!
