Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy passed away today, he was 83. The Theme from Star Trek” (originally scored under the title “Where No Man Has Gone Before”)was written by Alexander Courage for Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry and originally aired between September 8, 1966, and June 3, 1969. Several musical attempts were made to capitalize on the TV Show’s theme .In 1976 Disco pioneer Van McCoy ( record producer, arranger, songwriter and orchestra conductor)released a disco version of the song on his album “The Real McCoy”. In 1978 Eugene Edgar Page Jr. better known as Gene Page a Pianist, arranger, composer and producer, released a similar “Disco” version of the Theme song from the series.
The Gene Page version was more orchestral, probably due to Gene’s background, so it leaned more towards a ” Soundtrack” feel not really suited for the dance floor. Van’s version with the production team of Hugo and Luigi obviously having some influence was a very early Disco flavored track with the prominent Tom Tom used in the the Stylistic’s hit ” Hey Girl Come and Get It” and ” The Hustle”. Countless of other versions were recorded during the 70s, but in the Disco genre these were the two that stood out the most. Goodbye Mr.Spock we will miss you.
